Group 1: Impact Property
“Alien species of plants and animals have invaded every continent. They have enormous powers; they spread disease; they devour our buildings. Some are destroying the very land under our feet. Think of them as the first wave of an assault that could drive the greatest mass extinction since the end of the dinosaurs. What is causing this invasion, and what can we do to stop the rising tide?”

What happened in your section of the video? Explain:
· The “Impact” or what was happening in the area.
· What was the invader and where did it come from?
· What are they doing to control or fix the situation?
· What else does your team think can be done to control the situation?

Invaders

New Orleans has been invaded by termites, insects that eat wood and live in hot, sticky climates, a perfect description of the New Orleans climate. Termites originally came from Tokyo, Japan. After the war, Americans solders took back their supplies back in wooden crates made from the local wood. They didn’t know it but the wood was infested with termites which were carried back to America. When people threw the used, supposedly empty crates in the dump, the termites spread through out New Orleans. Because of the termites, peoples’ houses have been falling apart unexpectedly. People are now afraid to walk around in their own houses. To help the situation, experts will go around to small holes in the ground called bait stations. In the bait stations, there are little pieces of wood which attract termites. When they find termites in the wood, they replace the wood with poisonous paper so it kills of main nests. Our team thinks that they should start making houses out of something besides wood so that termites will stop eating the houses. Eventually, the termite population will start going down a lot, and hopefully, then termites won’t be such a problem.
One of the impacts of termites is that they are very costly. The Strange Days Website http://www.pbs.org/strangedays/episodes/invaders/experts/termites.html says,
According to termite expert Dr. Nan-Yao Su from the University of Florida, Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, approximately $1.5 billion is spent annually for termite control in the US Subterranean termites account for 80% of the damages.
